BURGERSDORP EXTENSION ELECTRIFICATION PROJECT BRINGS LIGHT TO 363 HOUSEHOLDS

3 July 2026
Greater Tzaneen Municipality Mayor, Cllr Odas Ngobeni, today officially switched on the Burgersdorp Extension Electrification Project. Speaking during the switch-on ceremony, Mayor Ngobeni highlighted the importance of electrification in promoting safer and more sustainable communities. "Many dangerous incidents occur in the absence of adequate lighting. It is therefore important that the residents of Burgersdorp Extension finally have access to electricity and the dignity, safety and opportunities that come with it," said Mayor Ngobeni.

The R7.8 million electrification project has provided electricity to 363 households in Burgersdorp Extension, significantly improving access to essential services while supporting socio-economic development within the community. The project also created employment opportunities for 28 local community members, including a Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Representative, thereby contributing to local economic empowerment during the implementation phase.

The Municipality extends its sincere gratitude to all individuals and organizations who contributed to the funeral arrangements. This includes Ward 21 Councillor Sophie Matiana, Ward Committee member Amukelani Mageza, Pastor Mkoki, the Mayor's Office led by Cassius Machimana, and the residents of Nkowankowa who supported the Mabunda family during this difficult time.

Mayor Ngobeni expressed his sincere appreciation to all stakeholders who contributed to the successful implementation of the project, with special acknowledgement to Eskom for its continued partnership with the Greater Tzaneen Municipality. "Our collective efforts demonstrate what can be achieved when government and its partners work together to improve the lives of our communities," he said
